MAKEMATION Review: Family, Hope, and AI Magic

If your MAKEMATION review is not in this piece, sorry! I could only write so much!

The love we have received for this film has been immense! Every day, Toyosi Akerele-Ogunsiji, the film’s Creator and Executive Producer, shares texts, emails, messages and social media comments of people from all walks of life talking about its impact on them. Those messages are still pouring in even as you read this!

It has been nothing short of humbling that a rookie filmmaker and her production outfit, Rise Interactive Studios, cooked up the best family movie of the Easter break.

One moviegoer said, “I learned a lot of lessons. My kids learned a lot. It’s a general lesson of life. Wherever you are today, don’t give up, because at the end of the tunnel comes the sunshine.”

Toyosi is a renowned Nigerian social entrepreneur committed to youth empowerment. Her efforts through Rise Networks, her company where she trains the next generation of STEM champions with a focus on Data Analytics and AI, have garnered numerous accolades nationally and globally.

Her vision for STEM adoption is what she attempted successfully to pass through to the audience with MAKEMATION, who got the message clearly.

Another moviegoer said, “As an African and a girl in STEM, I found the story to be so inspiring. It told me that my dreams aren’t impossible, and that good things can come out of this continent.”

She continued: “Honestly, I would rate the movie a 10. I have not seen a movie like that before. It’s the first of its kind for me, so I rate it a 10!”

MAKEMATION Review: Professional Reviewers Backup Audience Sentiments

Professional reviewers also praised for the effort put into the film. Muhibat Sulaimon of The Cable Lifestyle writes: “It was impressive how the plot didn’t just centre on a girl’s dream of breaking into the tech world, but also thoughtfully wove in important subplots like intertribal marriage, girls’ education, and the issue of medical misdiagnosis. These layers were seamlessly incorporated, adding depth and richness to the story without feeling forced.”

Somi B. of Nolly Critic writes: “The acting across the board is grounded and effective. The cast is deep and filled with notable names who never overshadow the central story. The casting itself deserves praise. The accents are accurate. The representation is layered.

“Shaffy Bello, Richard Mofe-Damijo, Nse Ikpe-Etim, Ali Nuhu bring weight without ego. Idara Peniel-Ekaidem’s debut performance reflects a generation of youth using technology to challenge norms. Michael Dappa, Adeoluwa Akintoba, Toyin Afolayan, and others round out a cast that clearly understands the story they are telling.”
