Makemation, an African AI-themed family film, has made a historic debut at Nigerian cinemas, grossing ₦32.9 million within its first four days of release. The film, which premiered over the Easter weekend, is now being hailed as the most successful African tech-centred film to date.
Directed by Michael ‘AMA Psalmist’ Akinrogunde and produced by Toyosi Akerele-Ogunsiji under Rise Interactive Studios, Makemation tells the compelling story of 17-year-old Zara Sodangi, a determined teenager from a poverty-stricken community on the outskirts of Lagos. Her life takes a transformative turn when she gains admission into the prestigious Makemation Institute, Nigeria’s leading tech academy.
The film’s storyline highlights how Zara uses artificial intelligence to tackle challenges in education, health, and food security, positioning her as a beacon of hope and innovation.
Speaking about the film’s impressive performance, producer Toyosi Akerele-Ogunsiji said,
