Tolu Obanro: Tyanx on Crafting Epic Sounds for MAKEMATION

Award-winning music director, composer, sound designer and film scorer, Tolu Obanro, is the man that audiences will have to thank for the wonderful sounds of MAKEMATION.

Many people represent the sentiments in Nollywood legend Charles Inojie’s epic joke, “Na dem dey rush us” from the Old Nollywood comedy classic, Doro Mega. No one in Nollywood behind-the-scenes represents it more than Tolu Obanro, the man who we all call “Tyanx”.

He has done work for several box office classics and created the sounds of Nigeria on many Netflix hits. He has been recognised far and wide for his impeccable sound design and film composition. The man’s work is so special that the Who’s Who of Nollywood has him on speed dial.

Yet, Tyanx says MAKEMATION is the most special film he has worked on to date.

Love at “First Cut” for Tolu “Tyanx” Obanro and MAKEMATION

“MAKEMATION became very special to me when I saw the first cut,” Tolu Obanro begins. “MAKEMATION is beautiful—I don’t know what that visual is—but I could already feel the passion, which made me become even more passionate towards working on the film.”

Tyanx began his career in the church. He made sounds to praise God with his choir, then started making sounds to aid the worship of gospel ministers like Mike Abdul, Kenny Kore and Monique Naija. Soon, he was given the chance to work in Nollywood, and his first major project was the 2019 hit, “Your Excellency”.

Tyanx went on to work on even bigger projects like the critically acclaimed Gangs of Lagos and A Tribe Called Judah, which is the second highest-grossing film in Nigeria.

So, what makes MAKEMATION special for the critically acclaimed Tolu Obanro?

“My colleagues keep asking, ‘Will AI take our jobs one day?’ So, I became really interested,” Tolu Obanro continued.

“Trying to create the sound for the film meant that I had to do a lot of research. I even used AI in my music composition for the first time ever. Some of the songs that were written, we intentionally used AI for them.

“I really became attached to the movie. There was no time I sat to work on it that I didn’t feel like it would go very far. Beyond the shores of Africa and all over the world, even. And I know that if I can feel that way after working on many genres of films, everybody who watches it will feel the same way, or even better. Trust me.”

The Art of Sound: Tolu Obanro’s Work in Nollywood and in MAKEMATION

What sets Tyanx apart as a film composer is his innate ability to translate the essence of a story into music.

Listening to his film scores evoke emotion and captivates the senses. His scores and compositions are integral to the narrative. They enhance the drama, heighten the tension, and immerse viewers in the world of the film.

This is what the audience will experience with MAKEMATION.
