It cannot be the Most Anticipated Movie of the year if it doesn’t have showstoppers like Wumi Toriola. This is why the Creator and Executive Producer of MAKEMATION, Toyosi Akerele-Ogunsiji, who’s also the founder of Rise Interactive Studios and Rise Networks, pulled all the stops to have her in the cast.
The box office sensation plays Sidi Tinini Tanana, a character in the slums who is friends with the protagonist’s mother. Her role is both comedic and essential to the story in that it represents the environmental pressures that young people face on their way to success.
Toyosi had several goals for MAKEMATION. One of them was to make a movie that resonated with Nigerians of all languages, tribes, religion and ethnicity. Getting recognisable faces was the best way to achieve this. For Nollywood fans in the South West, there aren’t many as recognisable as Wumi Toriola.
Also, as a film set in Lagos, Nigeria, the actress’ knowledge of local lingo and lifestyle was important. In her element as Sidi, Wumi Toriola reminded everyone of the street sellers that contribute to the beautiful madness of Lagos.
“Wumi Toriola as Sidi Tinini Tanana was Awesome,” MAKEMATION EP Says
Toyosi was full of praise for the work that Nollywood’s very own “Queen Lateefah” did on the project.
“I had to hold myself back from laughing on set every time Wumi Toriola had a scene,” the film’s EP began. “She was an absolute professional; chipping in here and there with ideas on how to make the slums scenes better. I just love her, and am now an even bigger fan of hers than I was before the film.”
